Now Hiring an Art Director

Who We Are

At Valkyrie, we win the tough fights. We’re a mission-driven team of strategists, designers, and campaign professionals committed to helping progressive candidates — especially women and underdogs — break through and win. As mail consultants, we bring sharp creative, relentless execution, and a deep belief in the power of good strategy to every race we take on.

Who You Are

You’re an experienced graphic designer with print design and/or direct mail experience. You thrive in fast-paced environments, are deeply organized, and lead with a calm, strategic hand — even when things move fast. You’re committed to progressive values, passionate about great design, love the details, and are relentless in your pursuit of excellence.

You care about delivering for clients, leading and mentoring other graphic designers, and making sure every piece of work is the best it can be. And you want to do it at a firm that values creativity, collaboration, and winning with integrity.

About the Role

The Art Director is responsible for overseeing the visual execution of direct mail campaigns from concept through final production. This role leads a team of freelance graphic designers, provides creative direction, and collaborates closely with account strategists and production staff to ensure each piece meets both the strategic goals and the highest design standards. The ideal candidate brings deep design experience, a strong creative voice, and a clear understanding of the unique demands of political communications.

This is a remote, full-time position. Candidates must be based in the U.S., and have access to reliable, high-speed internet.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the visual development of direct mail campaigns, ensuring high-quality, strategic, and on-brand creative work
  • Recruit, manage, and mentor a team of freelance designers, offering clear feedback and creative guidance
  • Collaborate with account teams to understand campaign goals, messaging priorities, and audience demographics
  • Translate political strategy and messaging into compelling, effective visual narratives
  • Oversee the design process from concept through production, including layout, typography, photo selection, and branding
  • Review and approve all design deliverables for accuracy, visual quality, and compliance with campaign guidelines
  • Ensure creative consistency across all pieces while tailoring each design to its specific purpose and target audience
  • Manage timelines and workflow to ensure all creative deliverables are completed on time and within scope
  • Develop visually compelling concepts and layouts for marketing proposals and internal materials, ensuring consistency and integrity of the Valkyrie brand across all platforms and communications.
  • Proofread pieces to ensure accuracy and compliance with style guidelines
  • Stay current with design trends, political messaging styles, and best practices in visual communication
  • Other duties as assigned — as a small, fast-growing firm, we expect all team members to be flexible and willing to lend a hand across projects when needed.

You Should Have

  • 5+ years of graphic design experience, with at least 2 years in an Art Director or lead designer role (political or issue advocacy work strongly preferred)
  • Exceptional portfolio showcasing a range of direct mail, print, or political design work
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
  • Strong typographic skills, attention to detail, and a sharp eye for layout and visual storytelling
  • Experience recruiting and managing other designers and providing constructive, motivating feedback
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Comfort working across time zones with remote colleagues and clients
  • A high standard of excellence, attention to detail, and the ability to self-direct
  • Understanding of the political landscape and a commitment to Democratic and progressive values
